I get many email and questions asking me “how much money do I need to start a business?” So here is a video answer. While the question of how much money do I need to start a business may seem like a very broad question, believe it or not, there is actually a very exact answer. In fact, there is a procedure to identify how much money is needed to start a business.

When you try to calculate how much money is needed to start a business, try to make two itemized lists. The first list will be expenses you will incur before you actually start your business. Those expenses may be legal help, accounting help, company setup and registration, lease of any office or space, etc. The second list you should create is a list of expenses that you will incur after you start your business. Those expenses can be marketing costs, lease costs, employee salaries, and much more.

And, of course, when you try to understand how much money is needed to start a business, add projected revenues to the second list to offset the expenses. And project that you will need to be in business 12-18 months on average before the business becomes self-sustaining. And that is how much money you need to start a business.
